The Mercury Baypark Stadium in Tauranga is a multi-purpose stadium, used for dirt track speedway and jetsprint events in the summer, and other events throughout the year. Right next to the stadium is the Mercury Arena, which is a $42 million multi-purpose facility. It has a cafe and catering services provided by the onsite caterer, Bay Catering.
The Mercury Arena arrived in the area in 2011, and it provides options for sports, business, leisure, and entertainment events. This $42 million facility has hosted national sporting fixtures, trade shows, conferences, gala dinners, corporate hospitality, and international music acts.
Over at the Mercury Stadium, a roof was completed over the south stand in 2011. This means that more than 90% of the grandstand seating is covered, so fans can enjoy events in comfort, no matter the weather. There's also an outdoor area called The Plaza, which is a 700 square meter courtyard at the eastern end of Mercury Baypark. Plus, there's a second sports field on site that gives extra turf for training and other event needs.
This place hosts a lot of events and activities. The Mercury Arena can host many sporting events, from professional games to community sports leagues. The multi-purpose courts can be used for indoor netball, indoor football, fastnet, volleyball, and basketball games.
For conferences and meetings, the Arena can host gatherings for 12 to 1,200 people. Many exhibitions and trade shows are held in the Arena each year in the 4500 square meter TECT Auditorium and the 2,349 square meter Lion Foundation Centre. Past events have included the Tauranga Spring Home Show, the Seriously Good Food Show, the Tauranga Career and Business Expo, the Women's Lifestyle Expo, the Tauranga Wedding Show, and an Active Retiree Expo.
Concerts have also been held here in the Mercury Arena. Bryan Adams, the Beach Boys, 10cc, Sol3 Mio, and Savage have all performed. Mercury Baypark has also hosted Bay Dreams, which is an annual music festival that happens in early January. The Mercury Stadium is also home to a speedway in Tauranga.
It's pretty easy to get to, located on the junction of major state highways, and only minutes from Tauranga Airport. There's parking on site for up to 5,000 vehicles. It's also close to the CBD, hotels, motels, shopping, and entertainment. The region is connected by services to international airports in Rotorua, Hamilton, and Auckland.
