This area, known as Gate Pā, is a suburb of Tauranga, located in the Bay of Plenty Region on New Zealand's North Island. It holds a significant place in history as the site of the Battle of Gate Pā during the 1864 Tauranga campaign of the New Zealand Wars.
Currently, Gate Pā covers about 1.76 square kilometers and had an estimated population of 4,100 people in June 2025, with a population density of 2,330 people per square kilometer. The 2023 census recorded 3,843 residents, which was an increase of 147 people since 2018 and 525 people since 2013. There were 1,929 males, 1,899 females, and 18 people of other genders living in 1,299 dwellings. The median age here was 32.4 years.
Looking at the demographics, 64.0% identified as European, 31.5% as Māori, 8.9% as Pasifika, and 14.1% as Asian. English is spoken by 95.6% of the population, while Māori is spoken by 7.2%. About 24.4% of the people here were born overseas. As for beliefs, 30.4% are Christian, 3.7% follow Māori religious beliefs, and 50.0% reported no religion. The median income was $40,100.
Economically, the Gate Pā Shopping Centre opened in 2006. It's a 10,000 square meter center with 450 parking spaces and 21 shops, including a Mitre 10 Mega and a Spotlight.
When it comes to education, Gate Pā School is a co-educational primary school for Year 1 to 6 students. It has a roll of 357 students as of March 2026. The school originally opened in May 1951 as Tauranga South School and changed its name to Gate Pā School in 2001. There's also Tauranga Girls' College, a state girls' secondary school established in 1958, which has a roll of 1,495 students. This school opened as a single-sex institution in 1958, having previously been part of Tauranga College.
