Okay, so I'm here in Ilam, which is a suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand, about five kilometres west of the city centre. It's super convenient because it's right near State Highway 1 and Christchurch Airport, and even close to the main shopping area in Riccarton.
The name "Ilam" actually comes from the ancestral home of a guy named John Watts-Russell, who settled here in Canterbury back in 1850. His family home, Ilam Hall, was in Staffordshire, England, and he just named his new property here Ilam as well.
One of the most interesting historical bits about Ilam is the old homestead. Back in the 1950s, the rector of Canterbury College, Henry Rainsford Hulme, lived there. His daughter, Juliet, was involved in the famous Parker-Hulme murder case in 1954, which is pretty wild to think about. The homestead itself was even a major filming location for Peter Jackson's movie about the murders, *Heavenly Creatures*. Since 1971, it's been the University of Canterbury Staff Club, so you can still check it out.
Speaking of the university, the University of Canterbury is located here, which makes Ilam a lively place. There are also a few schools around, like Ilam Primary School, which is right next to the university and even uses some of its facilities. Westburn School is another one, founded in 1961, and then there's Medbury School, a private boys' primary school that's been here since 1923. Apparently, there's even a weekend Japanese school that holds classes at Ilam School, which is pretty cool.
The area itself, including Ilam North, Ilam South, and Ilam University, covers about 3.37 square kilometers. It's quite a populated area, with a mix of people, and a good chunk of them are students, I imagine, given the university's presence. Lots of people born overseas live here too, which adds to the diversity. It's a really interesting spot with a lot of history and a busy, academic vibe.
