Hey, so I'm here in Mairehau, a suburb of Christchurch, and it's pretty interesting. It's about 4 kilometers north of the city center, and I can see a lot of new development happening, especially on the northern edge.

The name itself is pretty cool – it's named after Rose Mairehau Hutton, whose maiden name was Rhodes. Her father, Arthur Rhodes, was actually the Mayor of Christchurch back in 1901–1902 and owned a lot of property around here. So, it's nice to know there's a bit of history behind the name.

Looking at the numbers, it seems like a decent-sized place. It covers about 3.48 square kilometers, and they're estimating a population of around 7,100 by June 2025, which gives it a population density of about 2,040 people per square kilometer. From what I can gather, the population has been growing steadily; back in 2018, there were about 6,870 people here, which was a good jump from 2006.

In terms of the community, it's quite diverse. The last census showed about 84.7% European, 10.3% Māori, and then smaller percentages of Pasifika and Asian folks. It also looks like about 20% of the people here were born overseas. As for beliefs, a lot of people — about 51.4% — said they had no religion, but there's a good chunk of Christians too, around 38%.

There are a few schools here, which is good to know if you're thinking of moving to the area. Mairehau High School opened in 1961 and teaches years 9 to 13. Then there's Mairehau School, which is a full primary school for years 1 to 8; it's been around since 1953 and actually merged with Birch Grove School in 2004. There's also St Francis of Assisi Catholic School, a state-integrated primary school that opened in 2016 from a merger of two other schools. All of them are coeducational, which is pretty standard. It seems like a vibrant, growing community!
