So, I'm here in Spencerville, a semi-rural spot right on the east coast of Canterbury, just north of Christchurch. It's pretty cool, actually. The town basically backs right onto Bottle Lake Forest, which is great for walks.

There's a massive park here, about a hectare, and then an 80-hectare camping ground, which sounds huge. With all that, plus some wetlands and an animal and bird park, it's clearly a popular spot for people from Christchurch to come camping. I can definitely see why, it’s got a really relaxed vibe.

One thing to know, especially if you're thinking of building or doing some repairs, is that after the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, the land here was classified as Technical Category T3 by the New Zealand Government. That just means anyone building or repairing has to meet stricter standards, which is good to know for safety.

Looking at the numbers, this place is considered a rural settlement by Statistics New Zealand. It's not massive, covering about 0.37 square kilometers, and they estimate the population is around 600 as of June 2025. It's part of a larger area called Brooklands-Spencerville.

Back in 2018, when the boundary was a bit smaller, there were 513 people here. It's interesting to see the ethnic makeup too: mostly European/Pākehā, but also a good number of Māori, Pasifika, and Asian residents. Most people here, about 56.7%, said they had no religion in the census, with 34.5% identifying as Christian. Education-wise, a fair amount of people have a bachelor's degree or higher, and it seems like a decent portion are employed full-time.

It’s definitely a quiet, community-focused spot, especially with all the natural amenities around.
