I’m standing at Ferrymead Heritage Park, right in the Heathcote Valley. This is the site of New Zealand’s first public railway, which is pretty cool to think about. The park started back in 1964, when a bunch of local heritage groups all needed somewhere to store and show off their collections. They called it the Museum of Science and Technology at first, then Ferrymead Historic Park. Now it’s just Ferrymead Heritage Park. It’s open to the public, and almost everything here is run by volunteers. You can feel the history in the air.
