Wow, this Hakatere Conservation Park is really something. You're in a huge area of high country here, nestled between the Rangitata and Rakaia Rivers. It's pretty new, only established in 2007, but it covers a massive 68,000 hectares. You'll find rugged mountains, wide-open basins, tussocklands, and even some beautiful beech forests. It's a mix of alpine and sub-alpine ecosystems, with braided rivers, lakes, and wetlands, which means there's a ton of wildlife around.
This park isn't just one big chunk; it's actually a collection of protected areas all within the wider Ashburton Lakes region. So, you're near places like Lake Heron, Lake Emma, Lake Camp, and Lake Clearwater, plus the popular Mount Somers tramping area and even the Mount Hutt skifield. The closest town, if you need anything, is Mount Somers. They actually put this park together by combining 19 separate conservation areas, and then added more land later, like from the historic Hakatere Station. You can do a lot here, from picnicking and camping to tramping, hunting, fishing, and even windsurfing on the lakes.
