The story of the Piper of Kangaroo Point is a Brisbane ghost story. It’s said that a Scottish piper, homesick for his homeland, would often play his bagpipes at Kangaroo Point. He was a familiar sight, playing his tunes out over the water.
One day, he was playing his pipes on the cliffs when he saw a woman struggling in the water below. Without hesitation, he put down his pipes and jumped in to save her. He managed to bring her to safety, but the effort took its toll on him. He collapsed and died shortly after.
People say that after his death, the sound of his bagpipes could still be heard at Kangaroo Point, especially on misty evenings or during storms. The tunes were often described as haunting and melancholic, a ghostly echo of the piper's love for his music and his sacrifice.
Some accounts even suggest that the sound of the pipes would warn sailors of approaching bad weather or guide lost boats to safety, much like the piper himself had once guided the woman from the water. The legend has been passed down through generations, making the cliffs of Kangaroo Point a place where the past lingers in the air, carried on the wind.
